Ear training for singers
Sight singing is ear training you can see. Here is the listening half of the skill — what to train, in what order, and how to know it is actually working.
What ear training is — and is not
Ear training is the deliberate practice of relative pitch: hearing how notes relate to a key and to each other, and being able to reproduce those relationships with your voice. It is not perfect pitch, does not require perfect pitch, and is not helped much by wishing you had it. Perfect pitch names notes in isolation; relative pitch hears what a note is doing — and music is made of what notes are doing.
The good news follows directly: relative pitch is trainable in essentially everyone. The ear you have is the ear you need. It simply has not been asked the right questions yet.
The four skills inside the phrase “a good ear”
- Holding the tonic. Keeping do alive in your head while other notes happen. This is the foundation everything else stands on — and its failure is exactly why singers go flat.
- Intervals. Hearing the distance between two notes, and singing a named distance on demand. Covered fully in how to hear and sing every interval.

- Audiation. The strange, learnable act of hearing music silently — looking at notation and experiencing the sound with no sound present. This is the actual engine of sight singing.
The scale is the grid
Every one of those skills lives inside one object: the major scale. Not as a warm-up ritual, but as the coordinate system your ear measures with. When you know what la sounds like against do, you never have to compute the interval — you recognise the address.
Notice the scale is not evenly spaced, and your ear must know where the small steps live:
The drone: the oldest ear trainer there is
Indian classical training has done this for centuries: the tanpura sounds Sa continuously, and the musician learns every note as a relationship to it. That is ear training in its purest form — no flashcards, just an unbroken reference your ear cannot drift away from without noticing.
Steal the method whole. Put a drone on the tonic and sing scales, then thirds, then the exercises themselves against it. A ten-minute routine that actually compounds
- Two minutes: drone on, sing the scale up and down, slowly, listening for the two half steps.
- Three minutes: sing do–mi–sol–mi–do, then do to each scale note and back: do–re–do, do–mi–do, do–fa–do, up to do–do (the octave).
- Five minutes: two or three exercises from the graded course, each sung once, at first sight.
Frequency beats duration by a wide margin. Ten minutes daily will outrun an hour on Sundays, because you are building recognition, and recognition is built by many small meetings.
Two habits that cost nothing
Echo singing. When a melody crosses your day — a film cue, a doorbell, a phrase from the radio — sing it back, then find which note was do. Thirty seconds, no equipment, and it exercises tonal memory exactly where flashcards cannot.
Silent first readings. Before you sing any exercise aloud, read it once in your head and try to hear it — then sing, and notice where the imagined version was wrong. That gap between what you imagined and what the page meant is audiation being built, one correction at a time.
The part most ear training skips: feedback
Here is the quiet flaw in most self-guided ear training: you sing, you feel fine, and you have no idea whether you were right. Practising without feedback does not just fail to help — it can cheerfully reinforce the error. The fix is anything that tells you the truth: a teacher, a tuner, or an app that listens. In the studio, every note you sing comes back marked for pitch and time separately, which turns each exercise into a small, honest experiment. Sing, look, adjust, repeat — that loop is the whole method.
