Music theory for singers

Not the whole of theory — just the working set: what the page is telling you, and how to decode it fast enough to sing from it.

Theory has a reputation for being the homework of music. For a singer it is something much smaller and friendlier: a short list of conventions that let a page tell you what to do. Here is the working set — the part you use every time you sight sing.

The staff and the clefs

The staff is five lines; pitch is height. Each line and space is one letter name, cycling A through G. But lines mean nothing until a clef fixes them. The treble clef curls around the second line from the bottom and names it G:

The bass clef — the singer's other home, for tenors and basses — puts its two dots either side of the second line from the top and names it F:

The two staves meet at middle C, which sits on its own small ledger line just above the bass staff and just below the treble. If you sing from both clefs — many choral singers eventually do — learn each on its own terms rather than translating.

Key signatures: read them with two rules

The sharps or flats at the start of every line are the key signature: a standing instruction that applies to every note of that name, in every octave. Rather than memorising fifteen signatures, use two old rules:

D — do B♭ — do
Left: two sharps — F♯, then C♯. The last sharp is always ti, so do is one step above it: D major. Right: two flats — B♭, then E♭. The last flat is always fa, and the next-to-last flat names the key: B♭ major.

The signatures themselves are not random: keys a fifth apart differ by exactly one sharp or flat, which is the whole logic of the circle of fifths — and of the brass key wheel in the studio, which will transpose any exercise so you can meet every signature in turn.

Time signatures: counts, not fractions

The two numbers after the clef are not a fraction. The top number says how many beats each bar holds; the bottom names the note value that carries one beat — 4 for a quarter note, 8 for an eighth. So 3/4 is three quarter-note beats: a waltz bar.

The brass dot is the strong beat. 4/4 and 3/4 count in twos, threes and fours; 6/8 looks like six but is felt in two, each big beat dividing into three — which is why a jig and a waltz feel nothing alike.

The one that catches singers out is 6/8. Six eighth notes, yes — but felt as two beats, each dividing into three. If you count six, you will sing it correctly and stiffly; feel two, and it lilts. When a rhythm resists you, clap it on one repeated pitch before singing — rhythm and pitch are separate channels, and the practice guide shows how to train them separately.

Scale degrees: the seven jobs

Finally, the layer that turns reading into hearing. Every note in a key holds one of seven positions — and each position has a name, a syllable, and a personality:

This is the vocabulary the rest of musicianship is written in — intervals are distances between degrees, and chords are degrees stacked. None of it needs to stay theoretical: the graded course drills each of these ideas as sung exercises, and if you have your own scores, put them on the stand and read from the real thing.
